MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- The power distributor of the province, Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative (SOLECO), its management staff, office personnel, and some linemen, did the duck, cover, and hold just as quickly as the siren sounded on Thursday, March 9.

When the alarm stopped, all the employees went out from their office in Brgy.Nasaug, this city, hands clasped over their heads, walking in semi-bent positions as carefully as they could, to an open clearing outside the compound, and everyone made sure everybody was duly accounted physically.

There was no real shaking of the ground which should have prompted such quick responses, because the whole exercise was part of the first quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) which SOLECO actively participated.

The simulation activity was conducted in close coordination with the staff of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO), who gave more inputs on safety precautions for extreme cases of being trapped in an actual setting right after the drill.

“This is our first earthquake drill,” said Engr. Jonathan Empeno, SOLECO general manager, in an interview with PIA, shortly before the activity, adding that it was so timed to coincide with this year’s first NSED.

Empeno said he is contemplating on having more drills, including training on first aid responders, for the awareness of all employees, and to be always ready and alert on doing things right in such an emergency situation. (MMP with MNHS student interns/PIA Southern Leyte)
