BORONGAN CITY (PIA) -- The P997-M Samar Pacific Coastal Road Project in Northern Samar is almost 85% complete and is expected to be completed by June 30 this year.

This was announced by Engr. Christian Gadon, project-in-charge of contractor Ilsung Construction Co., Ltd. of Korea, and Pacific Concrete Products, in an interview with Radyo Pilipinas.

According to Engr. Gadon, the project is composed of 11.60 kilometers of concrete road and three (3) bridges, of which two (2) have been completed -- the Simora Bridge and Jangtud 1, while the Jangtud II Bridge is still under construction.

This road project starts from Simora junction to Laoang, Palapag, and Lapinig. The stretch of road is passable to motorists except for heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses.

The construction of the said project has been delayed due to many challenges such as the pandemic, frequent rains, and lack of supply materials.

At the height of construction, the contractor experienced 193 days of heavy rains (including typhoons) since the project began in May 2018.

"Out of 1K plus target days ha pagtrabaho, 320 days waray pakapag-trabaho," said Engr. Gadon. (Out of 1K plus target working days, in 320 days we weren't able to work [because of the problems we encountered]).

However, now that the project is coming to an end, farmers from the towns of Palapag, Laoang, and Catubig are expected to benefit from it.

In addition, the municipalities of Mapanas, Palapag, Gamay and Lapinig are also connected to the entire Northern Samar, which previously had to be crossed using water transportation.

The said coastal road project will also provide great relief for travelers, because with the connection of Eastern and Northern Samar, there is no need to pass through Calbayog or Catbalogan to reach the two provinces. (MMP/SDC/PIA E. Samar with Jeric Carpina/ESSU Intern)
