SAN JULIAN, Eastern Samar (PIA) -- The Local Government Unit of San Julian, through its Rural Health Unit, facilitated a 3-day Workshop on Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health dubbed Healthy Young Ones held on February 27 - March 1 in the three secondary high schools in the municipality.
To protect the adolescents' sexual and reproductive health, the Grade 9 students in San Julian National High School, East Visayan Institute, and Nena National High School were educated by healthcare workers about their health status, right to access health services, and a comprehensive discussion on sexual education, as well as tackling issues on gender and sexuality.
Public Health Nurse Marie Leigh Nicart disclosed that the program is their way of combatting misinformation on sexual health as well as disseminating accurate information on sexually transmitted diseases.
"Aside from providing them the accurate and necessary knowledge on their sexual and reproductive health status, the workshop is also an effort to ensure that this vulnerable group know their basic human rights such as their rights to refuse unwanted sexual advances and their rights to delay marriage. It also serves as a platform to address issues on gender and sexuality," said Nicart.
Meanwhile, Philip Hilario, Grade 9 curriculum coordinator of San Julian National High School, took to Facebook his gratitude to RHU San Julian for spearheading the said program.
In an interview with Municipal Mayor Dennis P. Estaron, he shared that the LGU is in full support of all the health programs of the RHU and that there's a lot of health and wellness programs for all the constituents, young or old.
"We also conduct Fitness Friday for the LGU employees from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday. Our aim is to help employees reduce health risks, enhance their effectiveness to improve quality of the work they produce, which will of course benefit the whole LGU and the municipality as a whole," Mayor Estaron said.
"The LGU employees engage in Zumba and sports like basketball, volleyball, and table tennis here in the municipal plaza. I also encourage all the San Juliananons to participate in this program because this is not only for the LGU employees but for all San Juliananons," he added. (MMP/VTG/PIA-E.Samar)
