MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- Some 295 corn and cacao farmers from the 18 municipalities and one city of the province received farm inputs assistance worth more than P1 million from the provincial government.
The materials were distributed Tuesday, last week, in a turnover ceremony held at the provincial research and extension center (SLPREC) in Brgy. Panan-awan, this city.
The provision of inputs was part of the enhancement project on cacao, and expansion of corn areas program, in order to improve the cacao and corn industry of the province, said Irwin Sy, provincial agriculturist, as quoted in the province’s social media post.
Farmer-beneficiaries were from Macrohon, Padre Burgos, Malitbog, Tomas Oppus, Bontoc, Sogod, Libagon, St. Bernard, San Juan, Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Silago, Liloan, San Francisco, Pintuyan, San Ricardo, Limasawa, and Maasin City.
They “enthusiastically welcomed the assistance ranging from corn seeds, fertilizers, cacao seeds, among others,” the post reported.
The agricultural intervention was also intended to encourage Southern Leyteños to start investing in corn and cacao, thus, increase the income of farmers, the post further said. (MMP/PIA Southern Leyte with PLGU)
