MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- A total of P1.15 million was released as cash assistance to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their dependents in the province.
Gov. Damian Mercado and Regional Director Aquilina Tarrobago of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) distributed on March 29 the financial assistance, and signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) at the provincial capitol to put up an OFW help desk.
In a social media post of the provincial government, “at least 32 distressed and displaced Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Southern Leyte received P20,000 financial assistance each from the Balik Pinas, Balik Hanapbuhay), under the Reintegration Program of Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).”
The program provides aid to returning OFW members to help them start their own business, the report said.
In addition, the regional OWWA office “granted P240,000 cash assistance to 11 scholars in the province. Nine (9) scholars under the OFW Dependents Scholarship Program (ODSP) received P10,000 each, while five (5) scholars received P30,000 each from the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP).”
A death and burial assistance in the amount of P120,000 was received by an OFW dependent under the Social Benefits Program intended for dependents of deceased active OWWA member, while P15,000 worth of medical support was given to each one of two (2) OWWA members.
“Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado, OHD Regional President Norman Victor M. Ordiz, and Family Welfare Officer of Southern Leyte Zoren C. Deguero were also present during the event,” the social media post further reported. (MMP/PIA Southern Leyte with Zennia Orias/Provincial Social
