BORONGAN CITY (PIA) -- A total amount of P6,048,000 educational fund of Rep. Ma. Fe R. Abunda of the Lone District of Eastern Samar was distributed to some 3,024 Senior High School (SHS) and college students in the province, each receiving P2,000 as educational assistance under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development - Eastern Samar Field Office.

According to Myra Sudario, staff of the Congressional District Office, some 242 students in San-Julian were given the educational assistance on February 27; 514 students in Lawa-an and Giporlos on February 28; 574 students in Quinapondan and Hernani on March 1; 801 students in Salcedo and Mercedes on March 2; and 893 students in San-Policarpo and Oras on March 17.

The educational assistance is given to student-in-crisis to help defray school expenses and/or cost of sending students/children to school such as school fees, school supplies, school projects, allowances, and other related expenses.

"I hope that this small amount can help them to finance their daily needs of schooling," Rep. Abunda said.

Beneficiaries may include those who are breadwinners, whether or not they are the heads of their families, working students, orphaned/abandoned and/or now living with relatives, children of solo parents or with unemployed parents, Overseas Filipinos (OFs), persons with disability, children of rebel returnees, or persons deprived of liberty.

The assistance shall not cover graduate (Masteral) and post graduate (Doctoral) studies including professional degrees such as, but not limited to, Doctor of Medicine and Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctor and those expenses for the review and registration fees for the licensure/bar examinations.

AICS is a government program that serves as a social safety net or stop-gap measure to support the recovery of individuals and families suffering from unexpected life events or crisis. (MMP/SDC/PIA E. Samar)
