CATARMAN, Northern Samar (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has strengthened its science and technology intervention to the local government units, to make people's lives better and safer.
DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. made the remarks during the inauguration of PAGASA doppler radar weather system in Brgy. Binaticlan, Laoang, Northern Samar on April 19.
Solidum said science and technology intervention has four thematic areas, first is the promotion of human well-being through acceleration of knowledge and technology generation and innovation that will ensure health and food security, access to clean water and green energy, and the generation of a strong cadre of human resources that will steer science and technology innovation in the country.
Second is wealth creation, through enhancement of the competitiveness and productivity of various enterprises, industry, agriculture, fisheries and other sector by ramping efforts on technology transfer and commercialization of research and development results creating higher value products and services, and job opportunities.
Third is wealth protection, through development and transfer of climate and disaster resilience technologies and providing STI-based information and services for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
Fourth is sustainability which will strengthen the R&D for environmental preservation and conservation, protecting R&D outputs through intellectual property protection and management and integrating smart practices to facilitate more open collaborative, citizen-centric and digitally enabled governance system in place.
Solidum believe that all of these objectives can be achieved if we have sound disaster prevention and mitigation systems in place.
“I am happy to note that we are on the right track,” the DOST secretary said.
He is hopeful that the newly established Laoang radar weather station will benefit all stakeholders in preparing, responding, and overcoming the disaster challenges at hand.
"Let us continually promote and uphold a safe community for the Waraynons and other nearby provinces under the Southern Luzon PAGASA Regional Services Division," he said. (MMP/TBC/PIA Northern Samar)
