MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has gone around different barangays in various local government units in Southern Leyte to facllitate registration of individual SIM cards.

This was learned from Rey Noel Collera, DICT provincial officer, in a casual chat at his office in barangay Tagnipa last week with work immersion students of Manhilo National High School (MNHS).

In going to the barangay with weak signals, they will look for areas, or in another barangay altogether, with strong data signal for the registration process, like what they did in Libagon and Tomas Oppus, Collera said.

He emphasized that SIM registration is free of charge, as he heard talks that some people paid fees in having their cards listed.

They had finished registering more than a thousand individuals on their own initiative, aside from those undertaken by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), he added.

The students made use of the time at the DICT office by having their SIM cards registered.

Collera explained that one of the reasons in registering cellular phone numbers is to prevent scammers, for it would be easier to trace them by then.

The deadline for SIM registration will be next month, April 26, and for now there is still no hint of any extension, Collera said, adding that henceforth unregistered SIM cards will become inactive. (MMP with Mica Necosia and Alanie Jade Ocat, MNHS interns/PIA Southern Leyte)
