MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- Satisfied buyers on Monday, July 17, filled Brgy. Tagnipa gym in this city as fresh fruits, vegetables, local agriculture products, and homemade processed meat products were on display, up for sale at lower prices than those sold at the market.

Ana Marie Macul, from Brgy. Ichon, Macrohon, was among those in the crowd, browsing different stalls, checking items, and buying farm products at surprisingly cheap prices.

The seemingly instant market day was the launching of Kadiwa ng Pangulo (KNP), an event which was simultaneously held in 81 other provinces all over the country.

Vendors were equally delighted in participating, in putting up their stalls with the brisk sales they enjoyed.

“It gives farmers like me a chance to sell our products faster and cheaper compared with the stalls at the public market,” said Lemuel Lora, a farmer, who, together with his wife, was one of the sellers.

Vice Governor Rosa Emilia Mercado, speaking during the short program, said KNP was, indeed, aimed to help the produce of small farmers more accessible, providing them an opportunity to sell directly to end users.

For his part, Gov. Damian Mercado expressed strong support for the KNP.

“Our goal is to help our farmers and consumers alike, wherein our farmers get to sell farm products more, and our consumers can access quality food at lower prices,” Gov. Mercado said. (LDL/MMP, with reports from Ivo Geraldo, VSU Intern/PIA Southern Leyte)
