City boosts surf tourism industry
BORONGAN CITY (PIA) -- The stage is set for the highly anticipated 2nd National Surfing Summit, as it will hit the waves of this city on November 24-26, with the theme "Surfing Horizons: Unveiling New Destinations, Igniting Tourism."
A coordination meeting was held on July 10 for the landmark event, which aims to bring together surfing stakeholders from across the country, to explore the immense potential of surfing as a tourism attraction and Olympic sport.
Karen Tiopes, Regional Director of the Department of for Tourism in Eastern Visayas, led the coordination meeting participated by esteemed regional figures, including Jeff Ortega, the Regional Director for Tourism of Region 1, Herbie Aguas, the Regional Director for Tourism of Region 5, and Mark Edward Velasco, the CFO of the United Philippine Surfing Association.
Their presence served as a powerful testament to the Department of Tourism's (DOT) unwavering dedication and support for Borongan City and the entire Eastern Visayas region.
Ortega said he is thrilled to witness Borongan City's hosting of this summit as it is a proof to the city's immense tourism potential and the collaborative efforts of all involved.
"The theme of the summit perfectly describes its purpose. Together with the LGU and other stakeholders, three regions have joined forces to continue the discussion and pave the way forward for surfing in our country," Ortega added.
Region 5, represented by Regional Director Aguas, has pledged its full support for the 2nd National Surfing Summit. They will be hosting the 3rd summit in the Bicol region, showcasing their commitment to the growth and promotion of surfing in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda emphasized that the city local government unit is committed to support other municipalities and fostering unity among residents.
"We stand united, and through this summit, we aim to significantly impact the tourism industry in the region and create substantial opportunities for economic development," Mayor Agda added.
The meeting was also attended by Provincial Tourism Officer Neil Alejandro Pinarok, Municipal Administrator of Guiuan Kinna Kwan, Sulat Councilor Sofia Isabelle Zacate, Sangguniang Panlungsod members Kathlyn B Cainday and Zen Daza, and 4Ps staff Benly Bergonio and Glicerio Bebita
Spearheaded by Borongan Surf City Festival Chairperson Rupert Ambil, the National Surf Summit's second run will be conducted alongside Borongan's annual Surf City competition – creating a synergized event that promotes the sport of surfing, youth development, and sustainable tourism practices, as well as a dynamic celebration of surf culture, uniting surfers and enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds.
The Summit is part of LGU Borongan’s concerted efforts of bolstering its identity as the birthplace of surfing in Visayas and establishing its name as a first-rate tourist destination. (LDL/VTG/PIA Eastern Samar)
