MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Southern Leyte has maintained a series of activities so that persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) under their watch will have wholesome fun and productive moments to while away their days.
Among these activities are sports, religious rites and reflections, and livelihood crafts that can give them income while their cases are being heard, said Alfie Paraiso, provincial jail warden who is also the concurrent head of the San Juan District Jail.
The e-dalaw was also continued for those with families in far places, as well as a limited face-to-face visit with reduced restrictions nowadays, Paraiso said in a recent Kapihan sa PIA radio interview.
Also, under a more relaxed pandemic situation, the Alternative Learning System (ALS) was pushed through, Paraiso shared, adding that before the pandemic a number of PDLs had successfully finished ALS education.
As to productive livelihood, Paraiso reported that in San Juan District Jail, the woodcarving and furniture making earned more than P44,000 by yearend, 2022.
Other jail facilities such as in Sogod and in Maasin City, there were also income-generating projects like parol-making, production of dish washing liquid, and metal craft but with limited space these were not fully utilized, he added.
As to health and wellness, all the PDLs in the three prison sites were already fully vaccinated and many got booster shots, and there are two nurses in every facility to regularly check and conduct physical examinations, Paraiso said.
Meanwhile, Paraiso announced the agency’s ongoing recruitment for fresh personnel, calling those interested simply to visit the BJMP-region 8 FB Page for details on requirements and qualifications.
Online applications for those qualified will be received only until next month, February, he further informed.
