MAASIN CITY (PIA) -- The head of the Department of Education (DepEd) in the province has called on teachers and principals in all public schools, including parents of graduating students, to keep away from spending expensive commencement exercises by next week, July 10-14.

Provincial Schools Division Superintendent Josilyn Solana cited DepEd Order No. 9 issued by Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte, which discourage excessive spending, such as holding the graduation in extravagant venues.

“Make graduation ceremonies simple but memorable, invite an alumni from that school who is now successful in life to minimize on expenses,” Solana declared at the Kapihan sa PIA forum on Thursday, July 6.

Schools can use their Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE), say P12 million, which were already downloaded, for purposes of graduation and moving up ceremonies, Solana advised.

She has to talk personally to one school head, Solana shared, who had planned to conduct the graduation exercises in an expensive venue.

Lyna Gayas, DepEd-province information officer, who was a guest at the same Kapihan, disclosed that non-payment of contributions of the school year just ended is not a ground for a graduating student to be excluded from the graduation rites. (LDL/MMP/PIA Southern Leyte)
