TACLOBAN CITY (PIA) – A week before the coronation night of the Miss Universe Philippines (MUPh) 2023, two of the three bets from Eastern Visayas won in the national costume competition held Thursday night, May 4, at the HRDC hall, Leyte Normal University, this city.
Airissh Ramos of Eastern Samar bagged the Best in National Costume award at the pre-pageant competition, outshining 37 other candidates.
Her costume, depicting the “An Bulawanon nga Katbari ha Sinirangan” or ‘The Golden Season Harvest in the East,” which was made of “Tikog” and “Buri” fibers, captivated the eyes and hearts of the board of judges during the preliminary competition.
Joemay-An Leo of Benguet and Kimberly Escartin of Southern Leyte came in second and third place, respectively.
Aside from being adjudged as Best in National Costume, Ramos, the Eastern Samar bet, also won the title as Tingog ng Filipina Visayas with Krishnah Marie Gravidez of Baguio as Tingog ng Filipina Luzon and Jannarie Zarzoso of Agusan del Norte as Tingog ng Filipina Mindanao.
“As an ardent supporter of the efforts to promote Eastern Visayas, the coming of the Miss Universe Philippines to our region gives me so much joy as it finally showcase the beauty of our region and the hospitality of our people," Tingog Party-list Representative Yedda Marie Romualdez said in a short message.
She also urged the candidates to be self-aware of the power of the platform given to them and use their influence with purpose and integrity.
The staging of the 2023 MUPh national costume competition in Eastern Visayas was made possible through the efforts of the Office of the House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Party-list Representatives Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre, Tacloban City Government through Mayor Alred Romualdez, the provincial government of Leyte through Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla, Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan Delo Santos, and Department of Tourism through Regional Director Karen Tiopes.
This year’s theme for Miss Universe Philippines National Costume Competition is ‘ani’ or harvest.
