PALO, Leyte -- The Department of Public Works and Highways in Eastern Visayas (DPWH-8) and Samar Provincial Local Government Unit break ground on Wednesday for the Spark Samar Sports Development Project in Catbalogan City, Samar.
DPWH-8 Regional Director Allan S. Borromeo bared that the sports complex has an initial allocation of P180 million for its first phase which would involve construction of its foundation and initial structures.
“Funded under GAA 2022, this will soon be implemented and I assure you that there is a big fund for this project in the succeeding year,”
Borromeo said.
This multi-year project will be settled in a 16-hectare land in Brgy. Lagundi in Catbalogan City, Samar. The sports development project will feature an 8100-seating capacity stadium complex which would house various outdoor and indoor sports, a museum, a business process outsourcing (BPO) campus, a commercial strip, hyper courts, a football and track field, an amphitheatre, a skatepark and even a hotel and residential subdivision.
In his speech, Borromeo said the infra agency has a firm commitment in completing and supporting this project.
“We will work hand in hand with both provincial and city government to realize this project,”
the official said.
The Spark Samar Sports City project aims to spur economic development in Catbalogan City through hosting and featuring major sports events like Palarong Pambansa. The sports complex is also expected to be the main and spacious avenue for festivals and other celebrations that will highlight the diverse culture of Samar province.
The groundbreaking ceremony was also attended by Samar's Second District Representative Reynolds Michael Tan, Vice Governor Arnold Tan, Architect William T. Ti of WTA Architecture and Design Studio, Samar PLGU officials, and other DPWH Region 8 officials. (DPWH-8)
